Xu Jiayu Leads Backstroke Events At Day Two Of The Beijing World Cup

Day two of the Beijing stop of the 2016 FINA World Cup Series continued with Zhu Menghui and Jeanette Ottesen continuing to reign over the sprint free events. The two delivered the top two times of the prelims session to return as the first and second qualifiers with times of 53.19 and 53.55 respectively.

Ottesen will also return as the top seed in the women’s 50 fly with a qualifying time of 25.77.

Xu Jiayu will look to sweep the backstroke events after day one’s win in the 100. Xu returns as the top qualifier in both the 50 (23.58) and the 200 (2:00.50).

South Africa’s Myles Brown picked up the top seed in the men’s 200 free with a qualifying time of 1:45.97, while South African teammate Chad le Clos returns tied for third (51.86) among a tight field of men in the 100 fly. Joining le Clos are Zhang Qibin (51.37), Miguel Ortiz-Canavate (51.81), and Pavel Sankovich (51.86).

The women’s 50 breaststroke is highlighted by the return of Alia Atkinson (30.24), Yulia Efimova (30.35), Katie Meili (30.44), and Breeja Larson (30.77). All but Meili will return for finals of the women’s 200 breaststroke, led by Olympic gold medalist Rie Kaneto (2:22.41).

On the men’s side, Yan Zibei and Marco Koch turned in the top qualifying times for the 100 breaststroke with times of 58.43 and 58.91 respectively.

Chen Jie swam to a first place seed in prelims of the women’s 100 back, touching in a time of 58.02. Katinka Hosszu joins her in the final as the second place seed with a 58.78.

Hosszu will also make appearances in the 200 fly (2:08.30), 400 free (4:07.29), 100 IM (59.24), and 50 fly (26.32).

Wang Shun and Josh Prenot highlight finals of the men’s 200 IM with the top two qualifying times. Wang posted a 1:57.70 for the first place seed over Prenot’s 1:58.94.

Russia’s Vladimir Morozov will look to continue his reign over the men’s 50 free, qualifying first with a 21.51. Morozov is currently undefeated in both the 50 and 100 free at the 2016 FINA World Cup series.
