NCAA Men’s Championship: Carson Tyler Masterclass Leads Another Indiana 1-2

Carson Tyler started fast in the platform diving event Saturday night at IUPUI Natatorium. He did the middle part fast and then finished fast, too.

Tyler threw down an absolute heater, scoring 515.75 points to rout the field and do the 3-meter/platform double at the NCAA Championships. It’s a repeat title for the junior Tyler and was in dominating fashion, even getting a 10 from one judge in the finals.

“It means a ton because platform is my main specialty. To be able to show out like that was a spectacular moment,” Tyler said. “It was really cool to compete with my teammates.”

Indiana went 1-2-7 in the final, their second 1-2 result of the meet. Quentin Henninger, the 3-meter runner-up, finished seventh. Instead, it was Maxwell Weinrich stepping up to finish second in 450.70. He absolutely crushed his last dive, scoring 80 points to hold the position.

Tennessee’s Bryden Hattie secured his third straight top-3 finish on platform in third at 44.60. Jordan Rzepka was fourth.

Tyler’s first five dives along would’ve placed him fourth, without need for his final. He applied the exclamation point anyway, scoring 88.20 on his 5255B to win by 65 points.

“They were falling tonight. I felt the (10) go through the water and it was a great dive overall. It was a great feeling,” Tyler said. “It was so loud. Trying to tune it all out was a goal, but it is hard when the whole room is shaking. It was a cool experience. When everyone is diving like that, it is a lot of fun to be in the mix like that.”

Hattie drew oohs and ahhs from the crowd when he scored 79.5 on the first round of finals. Tyler answered with 95.40 on his 6245D. He drew a 10 in the fourth round for his 307C, scoring 91.80 points, hit 87 on his fifth and then capped it off in style.

California got an A finalist and a B finalist, though it looks too little, too late for their chances of slowing the Arizona State title freight train. Freshman Geoffrey Vavitsas finished fifth in 404.90. Joshua Thai was 10th out of the B final.

Carson Paul of LSU was sixth. Pitt’s Cameron Cash was ninth.
